How do I know if my child could benefit from occupational therapy?
You do not need to know whether your child ‘needs occupational therapy’ before reaching out. If you have concerns about your child’s development or participation in daily activities, we’re happy to talk through your concerns and determine whether an occupational therapy evaluation may be appropriate.
What ages do you work with?
PEAK Therapy provides occupational therapy services for children from 0-18 years of age. If you’re unsure whether your child is the right age or fit for services, please reach out—we’re happy to discuss your concerns and determine whether PEAK Therapy may be a good fit for your family.
Does my child need a referral to start occupational therapy?
No. PEAK Therapy is a private-pay practice, a physician’s referral is not required to get started. Parents can contact PEAK Therapy directly to discuss concerns and determine whether an occupational therapy evaluation may be appropriate for their child.
However, if you plan to submit a superbill to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement, your insurance provider may require a physician’s referral or prescription for occupational therapy. We recommend contacting your insurance company before beginning services to verify their specific requirements and out-of-network benefits.
Where do therapy sessions take place?
PEAK Therapy brings occupational therapy directly to you! Sessions take place in your child’s natural environments, including your home and community settings throughout the Bozeman area.
Together, we will determine the location that best supports your child’s needs and works well for your family. The setting may vary depending on your child’s goals and where they are most comfortable and successful.
Providing therapy where your child lives, learns, and plays allows us to work on meaningful, everyday skills in the environments where they are actually needed. This approach can help make therapy more functional, individualized, and easier to carry over into daily routines.
What can I expect during the first appointment?
Your child’s first appointment is all about me getting to know them! We’ll talk about your concerns, your child’s strengths, daily routines, and the areas where you would like to see greater independence or success.
The initial evaluation may include observation, play-based activities, standardized assessments, and clinical assessment of areas such as motor development, sensory processing, emotional regulation, coordination, and primitive reflexes. The evaluation will be individualized based on your child’s specific needs and concerns.
After the evaluation, we will take time answer your questions and work together to develop individualized goals and recommendations. If occupational therapy is recommended, we’ll also discuss what ongoing sessions may look like and determine a plan that works best for your child and family.
What signs might be associated with retained primitive reflexes?
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that are present early in development and typically change as a child’s nervous system matures. When primitive reflex patterns persist beyond the expected developmental period, they may be associated with challenges in certain areas of development and daily participation.
Some signs that may warrant further assessment include difficulties with:
• Balance, coordination, or posture
• Fine and gross motor skills
• Body awareness and motor planning
• Sitting still or maintaining an appropriate seated posture
• Attention and focus
• Sensory processing and regulation
• Emotional and behavioral regulation
• Handwriting and other school-related tasks
• Crossing midline or coordinating both sides of the body
• Age-appropriate independence with daily activities
These signs do not necessarily mean that your child has retained primitive reflexes, and many can have a variety of underlying causes. A comprehensive occupational therapy evaluation can help identify your child’s strengths and challenges and determine whether primitive reflex patterns or other factors may be contributing to difficulties with everyday activities.
Do you accept insurance?
PEAK Therapy is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Payment is due at the time of service.
Upon request, we can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and varies depending on your individual insurance plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask about your out-of-network occupational therapy benefits, referral requirements, and reimbursement policies.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for services?
Yes. Occupational therapy services are generally eligible expenses for Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). You may use your HSA or FSA card to pay for services at PEAK Therapy. Eligibility can vary by plan, so we recommend checking with your HSA/FSA administrator if you have questions about your specific benefits.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that life with children can be unpredictable! If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we kindly ask that you provide at least 12 hours’ notice.
Cancellations made with less than 12 hours’ notice, as well as missed appointments, may be subject to a cancellation fee. We understand that illnesses and unexpected circumstances happen and will take these situations into consideration.
Consistent attendance is an important part of making progress toward your child’s goals, and we appreciate your help in keeping scheduled appointment times whenever possible.
